Overview

Nowadays the world of metering is evolving form the traditional electromechanical meters to electronic meters including Automatic Metering Reading (AMR) functions.

Most of the utilities in Europe and world wide are starting the evaluation of these new meters. For these utilities the best communication technology to provide the AMR function to the new meters is the Power Line Communication (PLC) technology. The PLC is a robust, low cost and easy to deploy solution that uses the proprietary medium of the utility. The utilities also need AMR systems based on non proprietary solutions conforming international standards.

The meter manufacturers need to provide solutions in a short period of time to assure his permanence in the market.

Some chip manufacturers provide integrated solution for electricity meters, but it does not include PLC function.

AMR system of ADD

AMR system of ADD is based on open standards and it has been developed in an European Project “OPERA” in collaboration with the main utilities of Europe. It includes the necessary software, the Narrow Band Head End (NBHE) and the reference design of the electricity meter that includes Automatic Metering Reading (AMR) function using PLC. The NBHE makes the concentration of the information from the meters to transmit it to the host of the utilities. The NBHE is installed in the center of transformation or in the meters room. The NBHE provides the gateway to the Broad Band PLC, ADSL or any other access protocol. The reference design of the electricity meter, based on the ADD1010 chip, is provided to the meter manufacturers to reduce the time to market of any new electricity meter, which includes the Automatic Metering Reading function using PLC. It includes all the hardware and software information and the support of ADD.

ADD1010 structure

The ADD1010 is the first integrated solution that provides all the necessary components to deliver an electricity meter including Automatic Metering Reading (AMR) function using PLC. ADD has designed a SoC that includes:

  • Energy metering Modem circuit for the Power Line medium
  • Medium Access Controller (MAC)
  • 8051 microcontroller
  • Display driver

ADD8051C12A

The ADD8051C12A core is a fully synchronous, single clock single edge, design. No latch memory elements are used. The same of the standard 80C51: Full instruction set peripherals

  • 2 timers standard serial interface
  • five interrupt sources: 2 external, 2 timers, 1 standard serial interface
  • internal RAM size from 64 to 256 bytes
  • port operation:to external access bidirectional triestate buffers and pullup resistors must be added to P1 and P3

ADD1210

The ADD1210 is a Medium Access Controller (MAC) in hardware. It has been developed to reduce the CPU computational load in PLC systems from 95% to 5%. Then the 8051 is free to be use in the application tasks Conforming open standards as TCP/IP, EHS V1.3, DLMS or PLAN


ADD1310

The ADD1310 is a PLC modem that uses a single power supply of 3.3V and few external components. It is a full digital design and can be implemented in any digital technology from FPGA to ASIC.

    The FPGA is configured with the ADD1010, but depending of the necessities of the client it is possible to modify it if a client needs it. For example, it’s possible to add more timers, another serial port, another communication protocol, and so on.


ADD7230

The ADD7230 is the reference prototyping board to develop and prototyping new devices using the Power Line Communication (PLC) technology of ADD and his System on Chip (SoC) solutions. The ADD7230 is a small board of 4x4cm size including all the electronic to implement a PLC application. Using this board you can test the ADD1010 IP, the first SoC for PLC, of ADD. This board can be used by OEM user to start up in the PLC technology. The ADD7230 board includes a FPGA configured with the ADD1010 IP, the program and RAM memory and 20 general purposes I/O and a serial RS232 link
